British Coast – Stage 042 – Herne Bay to Margate

16th November 2024. Taking advantage of the tide being out, and walking around the edge of the cliffs from Herne Bay to Reculver, its ruins standing guard over what was once the channel that separated the Isle of Thanet from the mainland. The River Wantsum long-since reduced to little more than a drainage ditch, when once ships navigated through here to Canterbury. Crossing over to Thanet, the change is abrupt. The chalk cliffs making for a visually interesting boundary, and giving an altogether different character to this quite distinct corner of Kent. Plenty of beaches too – and at the end of the walk, Margate, with its aging pleasure palaces, lighthouse, Turner art gallery, and line of ships moored off shore waiting to go up the Thames Estuary to the London ports. 13 miles.
