15 February 2025. A cold winter’s day, matching the desolate feel of walking along Sandwich Flats. After first having to follow the Stour to the coast, from the now inland former port of Sandwich. Sandwich Bay, along with Pegwell Bay on the other side of the Stour’s outpouring, offering a protected habitat – at least in its opening section – for coastal birds. But then the non-descript remains of Sandown Castle (the first of three that once protected the Deal shoreline) announces entry into Deal. Its pier offering a hospitable respite from the morning cold. In the distance, the start of Dover’s famous white cliffs can just be made out. 11 miles.
