16th April 2023. A foggy start in Felixstowe, but by the time the sun had fully risen, that had all burned away, leaving a very warm, bright day. The early summer feel appropriately met with a first sighting of a swallow. This walk involved two foot ferries: across the River Deben and the Butley River. Passing by Bawdsey Manor, famous for the early development of radar. Here coastal erosion is much in evidence, the cliff path closed because the cliff has collapsed. More Martello towers and other coastal defences marking the route, while Shingle Street, with its historic Coastguard cottages, offers a bohemian coastal refuge. By the end, the sea itself hidden by the sandbanks of Orford Ness, and the River Alde winding its complicated route out. 19 miles.
